Charles R. Daniels, 78, Lewiston

      Charles Russell (Chuck) Daniels, 78, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, of heart failure at his Lewiston home.
      He was born in Cavendish on Aug. 21, 1922, to Jesse and Juanita Blackburn Daniels. He attended school at Cavendish and graduated in 1939 from Southwick, the only boy in the class of nine students.
      After graduating, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps, the U.S. Forest Service and delivered gas out of Kendrick.
      In 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was a sergeant in the 746th Tank Battalion. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes and the Rhineland. While in the service, he was awarded the Bronze Star.
      Chuck married Phyllis M. Nygaard in 1943 while on furlough. Together, they had five children. The marriage ended in divorce in 1957.
      Returning from the service in 1945, he worked for Hanson's Garage and was part of the Orofino Volunteer Fire Department. He joined the Army Reserves and went to Germany during the Korean WAr. After returning from the war, he bought a truck and hauled lumber and logs for the White Pine Lumber Mill.
      In 1959, he married Janice L. Plett and together they had two children. They moved to Boise, where Chuck did mostly construction work. They later moved to Lewiston, where Chuck built service stations and then worked for the maintenance department at Lewis-Clark State College, where he retired.
      Chuck enjoyed camping and loved being with his family and friends. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Orofino.
      He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse; his mother, Juanita, a brother, Jack; a son, Pat; and his wife, Janice.
      Survivors include his children, Mike Daniels and Kelli Pearson, both of Lewiston, Randy Daniels of Colfax, and Dave Daniels, Sandy Smith and Tim Heywood, all of Weippe; two brothers, Lyle Daniels of Clarkston and Dick Daniels of Missoula, Mont.; 15 grandkids; and three great-grandkids.
      At Chuck's request, there will be no funeral. A memorial covered-dish dinner will be held at the VFW Hall at a later date.
